Slide 2:  The pawpaw, Asimina triloba, is an understory tree that is usually found in the understory of forests in the SE U.S. Please note the native range map on the slide. The pawpaw's native range is shaded in green on the map. The fruit has an interesting flavor that resembles a blending of pineapple, mango, and banana. Some fruit can have a melon aftertaste. Some fruit from wild trees can have a bitter aftertaste and poor eating quality. At KSU, we are interested in developing pawpaw as a new fruit crop for small farmers in the SE, many of whom grow tobacco. Pawpaw is also of interest to homeowners as a component in edible landscapes. Nurseries are interested in selling these unique trees. Another positive aspect of growing pawpaw is that organic production is possible.
