Land Grant Mission Statement: Kentucky State University is one of seventeen 1890 land grant institutions in the United States. The mission of the 1890's is to conduct research, service, and teaching in the food and agricultural sciences. In addition, the University and the Kentucky Council of Post Secondary Education recently developed a new mission statement for the institution. The new mission, with regard to the Land Grant Program (LGP), parallels the above stated mission. It states, "Kentucky State University, as one of the two land grant institutions in the system, should carry out its responsibilities under federal law and participate fully in appropriate U.S. Department of Agriculture programs, placing emphasis on activities that are in accord with the mission of the institution." Therefore, the Land Grant Program carries out these joint missions by fulfilling the service requirements of the Morrill Act of 1890. The true mission of the Land Grant Program is to help resolve agricultural, educational, economic, and social problems of the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Nation. The primary customers of the LGP are limited resource persons who generally do not receive services and assistance from traditional sources. The major administrative divisions of the Kentucky State University Land Grant Program are Community Research Service, the Cooperative Extension Program, and the Aquaculture Program.
